Aston Martin Rapide S spied

Even faster four-door will get powerful V12 from DBS and revised styling.

Aston Martin Rapide S
The Rapide is ready to live up to its name. Spy photographers have caught a thinly-disguised prototype out on the road near the firm's HQ in Gaydon, Warwickshire, and our sources have confirmed that it's a faster 'S' version of the four-door supercar.
The standard Rapide is no slouch, with a 470bhp 6.0-litre V12 it can cover 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds, and you can read our review of that car here. But the Rapide S will be even quicker and feature the uprated engine from the DBS - with 510bhp. To cope with the extra power, expect carbon-ceramic brake discs as standard and firmer suspension settings for better body control.
As you can see in our pictures, the front and rear styling will get a refresh to give it a more aggressive appearance. A lower front bumper now gets an additional air intake, while deep scoops either side will mark it out from the standard car. At the back there's a more prominent boot lip spoiler and a reprofiled bumper.
Expect a price hike to match the improved specification, bringing the cost of the the Rapide S close to the £200,000 mark when it arrives later this year.

Chrysler Ypsilon first drive

Chrysler Ypsilon first drive
If you ever go to Italy you’ll have noticed all those little Lancia Ypsilons scuttling about the cities. The Ypsilon always sold a bundle there, but stiffed everywhere else. Now there’s a new one, and Lancia wants it to spread its wings, even to Britain. Come September it’ll be here in right-hand drive.
But with Chrysler badges.
Huh? Chrysler makes big American cars. Well yes, but that’s exactly the point: Chrysler needs little ones. Fiat, which owns Lancia, also owns Chrysler. It’s deemed the pair a suitable couple for an arranged marriage.
So in mainland Europe, Chryslers – including the new 300 and Voyager – will be sold as Lancias alongside the Ypsilon and Delta. In Britain, all four of them will be badged Chrysler.
Ah but what about Lancia’s magnificent heritage, fully endorsed by our telly trio? Stratoses, Integrales, Fulvias. Even Jeremy’s Botswanan Beta. Yes yes, but face facts: Lancia bombed out of Britain 20 years ago because no-one bought the cars.
No-one except us remembers them. It’s Chrysler that has the name recognition and the dealers now. Get over it.
Whatever their heritages, Chryslers and Lancias share a direction now. Both are meant to be well-specced comfy cars with distinctive design and unusual packaging, but not remotely sporty. Think of the 300. Or even of the PT Cruiser (that was quite the novelty once, it’s just that they left it to go mouldy). If you want a sporty Ypsilon, tough luck. That’s what Abarth and Alfa are for.
The Ypsilon is actually based on the 500, but with a wheelbase stretch. This has four useful effects. It means there’s more back-seat room. It really improves the ride. It allows the Ypsilon to be a five-door, which is how many city cars (eg the Koreans) sell now. And it changes the 500’s proportions from those of a cupcake to those of a car.
But the Ypsilon is still a small car, significantly more fun-sized than the average supermini. This makes it light, and so it goes well, whether motivated by TG’s Engine of the Year the TwinAir petrol, or the 1.3 diesel. Because the engines aren’t stressing, they’re quiet too. They’re sort of cars where 0-62 in 11 sec seems quite nippy.
The tyres are thin and you can just hurl it around. The TwinAir especially feels like it’s got no weight over the nose. It hasn’t, much. So even if it isn’t labelled a sporty car, in the right place – cramped little roads and roundabouts – it’s a hoot.
Make what you will of the styling, but you won’t mistake it for anything else. The rear doors have hidden handles, and the roof floats above that sail of a rear pillar. I rather like the two-tone version.
Inside, the clocks are centrally mounted to make it feel roomier. The assembly quality is fine but some materials aren’t great, but remember it’s a mildly plushed-up city car, not an Audi A1 competitor. About £13k will net you a nicely kitted example.
The only worry then is all those Chrysler Voyagers on The Apprentice. Is driving a Chrysler Ypsilon going to turn you into a mini version of those pushy proto-tycoons in the back seat, endlessly bellowing dim-witted potty-mouthed orders into a mobile phone?

Dacia Duster Pikes Peak racer revealed

Good news! Dacia has decided to enter the famous Pikes Peak international hill climb with that angry Romanian brute you see above; a one-off rally-machine as daft as the brush it is named after.
Purpose built by Tork Engineering, Sodemo and Renaultsport, the Dacia Duster ‘No Limit' gets a Nissan GT-R 3.8-litre twin-turbo engine developing 850hp, and is mated to a sequential six-speeder ‘specially developed to cope with so much power'. So made from unobtanium and iron, probably.
Dacia tells us the aerodynamic package fitted to the ‘No Limit' is ‘rarely authorised in motorsport', which makes us afraid. Will it eat spectators as it powers up the hill?
Three-time Trophee Andros winner Jean-Phillipe Dayraut will pilot the extreme machine at Pikes next month in the ‘Unlimited class' on 26 June in Colorado. We expect seismic shifts to occur on that day. Or another volcanic eruption. Click through for more pics.

Lancia Ypsilon 0.9 Twin-Air First Drive

Lancia Ypsilon 0.9 Twinair review

http://cdn.media.autocar.co.uk//Car/Chrysler/Ypsilon/265111194838357356x236.jpg

Test date Wednesday, May 25, 2011  Price as tested  £14,500

http://cdn.media.autocar.co.uk//Car/Chrysler/Ypsilon/265111194958344234x155.jpg

What is it?

This is the all-new Lancia Ypsilon supermini, or - as it will be known in the UK and Ireland - the Chrysler Ypsilon. As a consequence of Fiat Auto’s takeover of the US car maker, Lancia and Chrysler are being merged in Europe in a similar manner to the way Vauxhall and Opel operates.
The upshot is that the Chrysler badge will not be seen on the Continent from now on. Cross the channel and the expanded dealer network will be selling Lancias and Jeeps alongside each other. Only in the UK and Ireland, where the cost of re-launching the tarnished Lancia badge was seen too great, will the Chrysler badge still be used.
This is the fourth generation of Lancia’s supermini. British enthusiasts with longer memories will remember that the first of the series was sold in the UK with the Y10 badge. The last two Ypsilon models - noted for their individual looks and be-grilled noses - were only sold on the Continent in left-hand-drive form. Lancia withdrew from the UK market in autumn 1993.
Fiat Auto has built this car on a stretched version of the platform used under the Fiat 500. Much of the extra metal has gone in front of the rear wheels in order to improve accommodation for rear passengers and allow a five-door layout.
Three engines will be available. A 68bhp 1.2-litre Fire EVO II petrol engine, the 84bhp 0.9-litre twin-cylinder Twinair petrol engine and a 94bhp 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine. All three get stop-start as standard and all three drive a five-speed manual ’box as standard, although the DFN semi-auto ’box is an option with the Twinair engine.
The car’s styling is in keeping with the ‘floating roof’ theme that was launched with the current Delta, although the clamshell bonnet and shield-shaped grille is remarkably similar to that of the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Inside, it retains the same central instrument pod theme as the previous models, with the shift again mounted high on the centre.

What’s it like?

The Ypsilon is being sold - in Europe at least – both as offering ‘accessible luxury’ and as a premium city car. Odd, then, that the two most popular engine choices are so unlikely to deliver on this promise.
The Twinair, while impressively torquey and incredibly willing to work seamlessly around to the rev limiter, also has a very vocal, thrumming soundtrack. There’s no doubt that this remarkable little motor rather encourages the driver to press-on, swapping up and down the ’box to exploit the performance. To that end, the shift action is pretty (although not completely) clean and the lever very well-placed.
A drive in the diesel Ypsilon also revealed a distinctly less compliant ride and an engine that certainly made itself heard in cut-and-thrust city driving. Again, at odds with the luxury message.
It was hard to really nail down just how well the Ypsilon will ride in the UK, mostly because the Turin cobbles and craters were such a challenge. But out of town, the car seemed stable, unruffled and pretty able to cope with the odd sunken drain cover.
Overall, a car this short (with a wheelbase of just 2.39m) and light can’t help but be handy and nippy, but the Ypsilon has no great sparkle, either in the way that it steers, changes direction or rides. It exudes competency, but nothing more.
Upfront, the cockpit is wide enough for two adults to feel at ease and is a pretty comfortable place to sit, despite the rather high-set seats and lack of telescope adjustment for the steering wheel. In the back the story is rather different. While stretching the 500 platform has created a decent boot, the rear cabin is cramped.
The rear seat squabs are very short, the seatback very upright and headroom is limited, unless the double-glass sunroof is added. Even Lancia admits that the Ypsilon’s rear can only accommodate a 55th percentile person, which means half the population can’t get comfortable.

Should I buy one?

If you are a Citroën C3 or Toyota Yaris owner, Chrysler would like to speak to you. If you put a premium on individuality, you might want to speak to them. If you are an enthusiastic driver, you probably won’t be impressed by the Ypsilon.
It’s the promises of luxury, however, that are hard to understand. Distinctiveness is certainly on the menu, both inside and out and that will be enough for Chrysler to sell the 6000 cars per year it is aiming at. But the excitable Twinair engine and the vocal diesel are the wrong powerplants for a car that wants to reflect small car luxury, and the interior plastics are not quite special enough.
And, at an expected £14,500 for the well-specced - but as yet unnamed - mid-range Twinair model (which lacks only the leather trim, fogs and bigger alloys of the range-topper) this car is in a very competitive market.
A small, smooth, four-cylinder turbo petrol engine could transform the Ypsilon into something that gets at least closer to a baby luxury car. This Twinair, however, has a rather contradictory personality.

Classic Porsche racers to go on display

Say the words ‘Porsche 956/962' to a card-carrying Stuttgart enthusiast and you will elicit a cerebral reaction classified as ‘seismic'; an indictment of just how astonishing these racers were.
The FIA's reclassification of international sportscar racing at the beginning of the 1980s forced Porsche to re-evaluate its earlier 935 and 936. But when it finally rolled out its prototype racing 956 - and later, 962 with the longer wheelbase - it created an icon in its motorsport range.
Now, a huge collection of surviving Group C Porsches are being brought together for this summer's annual Salon Prive supercar show. Gathered over a 10-year period, they document a rather astonishing chapter in Porsche's racing history. And we've got all the pics right here...

One-off Ferrari Superamerica 45

Real estate magnate’s bespoke beauty gets first public airing this weekend
Posted by: Matthew Jones, 20 May 2011

This is the latest palpitation of Ferrari’s customer-commissioned Atelier Ferrari service – the Superamerica 45.
Based on a standard 599, its bespoke bodywork was specced by New York real estate magnate and Fez collector, Peter Kalikow, and includes a rotating hard-top. Just like the Renault Wind. Only made out of carbonfibre.
Save for the bespoke roof, matching carbon boot into which it can collapse and some stodgy b-pillars, it’s not massively different from the production 599. There’s an aluminium a-pillar trim here, chrome front grill there and a set of new wing mirrors inbetween. Oh, and that somewhat turgid WKD blue paintwork.
It was painted thus to mach Kalikow’s other Blue Antile Fez – a 1961 Ferrari 400 Superamerica. Marnaello’s paintsmith’s set off the unique hue by finishing its lower exterior appendages in a slightly darker shade, then splashing some colour onto its diamond-cut wheels. Inside, dark blue carbonfibre trim and instrumentation clashes wildly with 'cuoio' brown leather trim.
This isn’t Kalikow’s first go at customizing a Ferrari: in 2006 he commissioned Pininfarina to create the 612 Kappa, which is based on a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. Tweaks were modest and included gentle reshaping of the bodywork, Enzo rear lights, chrome headlight bezels and a photovoltaic sunroof, allowing manual adjustment of its tint.
Want to get up close? It’ll be at the 2011 Villa d'Este Concorso d’Eleganza in Italy on May 21 (along with all these incredible cars).

Koenigsegg's Agera R. The Stig. A frozen lake

The phrase is prophetic, appropriate and recurring. It consists of the first seven words of the following quote: “Be careful, it has eleven-hundred horsepowers. There is sometimes suddenly icy areas of unexpectedness, and the tyres are half as wide at the back as they should be. Seriously, I would be really, really careful,” says Bård Eker in a lilting Norwenglish hybrid accent as he runs me through a checklist of the new Agera R’s intimate buttons. Bård describes himself as ‘chief floor wiper’ at Swedish supercar-maker Koenigsegg, but is, for all his very British sense of humour, a serious stakeholder in the entire operation, a fact borne out by his next statement.

BMW 328 Hommage concept car revealed

Fact: the BMW 328 Touring Coupe from the 1930s still holds the record for the highest average speed on the Mille Miglia. Fact: it's 75 years old this year.
Fact: the 328 Hommage made in its honour looks astonishing.
BMW has celebrated one of its most famous racing cars by feeding it through a rebigulating machine to create a thoroughly modern concept, and follows the rather glorious and rather orange M1 Hommage from 2008.

Today is a good day. Today, Jaguar has announced plans to build a limited run of its stunning C-X75 supercar in conjunction with the Williams F1 team.

Official: Jaguar C-X75 to be built

Sensational 200mph four-wheel-drive electric supercar gets green light. Jets from concept sadly absent
Jaguar C-X75
You'll no doubt remember the Jag. It premiered at the Paris motor show last year as a proper surprise debut, packing four electric motors - one on each wheel giving it four-wheel-drive - and jet engines to supplement the car's range and make it ridiculously cool.
Sadly, Jaguar tells us the production version will drop the jets and instead pack a ‘highly-boosted' four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor on each axle. The fiery canons of goodness might make it into a later section of the production run though, as parent company Tata has a big stake in Bladon Jets. No word on power output but expect it to hover near 800bhp, possibly more, housed in that lovely 1,350kg body, complete with a carbon-fibre chassis.
1,350kg, by the way, is lighter than a Ford Focus.
Williams will provide a helpful hand in aerodynamics, carbon composite manufacture and hybrid technologies, and Jag promises a direct tech transfer between motorsport and road-going production cars.
Key stats are 0-60mph in less than three seconds, 0-100mph in under six and a 200mph top speed. Jag plans to build around 250 C-X75s that will hit the UK in a couple of years.
Why is Jag building this ballistic car? Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar Brand Director tells us: "The C-X75 received an incredible reception as a concept car. There is a clear business case for this exclusive halo model. No other vehicle will better signify Jaguar's renewed confidence and excellence in technological innovation than this."
No doubt you're dancing around the room in your underwear, praising the gods of speed. Well, you might want to sit down for the next part. It'll cost somewhere between £700,000 and £900,000. Ahem.
It'll be British built and forecasted emissions sit at less than 99g/km of CO2, no doubt keeping sandal-wearing hippies slightly less displeased. Get ready for a war,Porsche 918 Spyder. It really is a good day. Your thoughts, please.
UPDATE: And as if by magic, here is the original Jag concept which has just turned up outside our office. It's going to be on the One Show tonight (Friday 6 May), alongside Hammond. BBC1, 7pm.

First tuned Lambo Aventador

We've barely caught our breath, what with giving you an epic 2,070bhp triple test of three Aventadors in this month's TopGear magazine (out tomorrow). But look at this, someone's only gone and modified one.
Oakley Design has decided that Lamborghini hasn't given its new Aventador enough go, and has announced a tuning programme pushing the Lambo's power to 760bhp and 550lb ft of torque.
A remapped ECU, larger airbox, titanium exhaust, wider rear tyres and a host of carbon fibre goodies will appear. For ‘hardcore clients', Oakley is also offering a rear-wheel-drive-only Aventador, removing the front diff and associated gubbins to save 85kg. You may require medication.
Just five are being built with three of them already sold...

RM Auctions' Villa d'Este sale

You want to sell your family. Maybe even your house. Sell it all and find some money, because this weekend sees RM Auctions hit the Villa d'Este concourse, and they're bringing along some rather fine machinery to tempt lots of moneyed types.
Like a prototype Ford GT40 works roadster, raced, binned, left for dead and then restored to Ferrari-baiting magnificence. Or a Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder, which, if we're not mistaken, is the dictionary definition of ‘lust'. Or the likely headline sale of the show, the Bugatti Type 57, replete with a supercharged 3.3-litre straight-eight and that delightful baby-vomit paintjob. Or the first prototype of the Lancia Stratos HF Zero, above, a car Top Gear rather admires.
The auction kicks off on 21 May and we've got a full preview for you to ogle. Have a click through and then, once you've calmed yourself, find money. Lots of it.

Honda CR-Z Mugen breaks cover

Eco motoring's just got sexier. Or less unsexy. Either way - meet the Mugen-tuned Honda CR-Z in the picture above.
It's a one-off prototype from Honda's go-to tuners, Mugen. And we dearly hope it gets put into production.
Its superchargerising and spanner work with the IMA hybrid system means power from the 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine's boosted from 113bhp to nearly 200bhp and 181lb ft of torque. And it's lighter, too: Mugen detached 50kg from the chassis, replaced the bonnet with a carbon-fibre one and bolted on lightweight Mugen alloys.
The reckoning? Honda claims it reaches 60 in a similar time to the Civic Type R (6.6 seconds - RIP) but can still manage more than 50mpg in eco mode. It does drop to mid-30mpg when you deploy full-fat Mugen mode, but we'll let it off.

We've thoroughly enjoyed the bog-standard CR-Z on long-term loan to Top Gear HQ, firm ride aside. Can you think of a potentially cooler factory hybrid, TopGear.commers?
